Asalam o alaykum wr wb!
Last night, it was 18th of Ramadan and the moon looked shining, bright and was covered in clouds. The sight was really fascinating for me as I am a regular observer of moon and wonder on the creation of Allah Subhana huwa taa’la. Its good to observe the beauty that Allah’s creation has. Perfection, exclusiveness, patterns and peace are the attributes of its aesthetics, unlike the architecture created by human beings, creates a nirvana upon my sight. But, last night it was different. The nirvana transformed into a burst of thoughts because of the knowledge I’ve reasoned through science.
Let’s go back to Inter/A-Levels Physics before I make my point. Remember, when we studied the mass of earth and moon, gravitational pull, light years and such concepts. The few concepts are as follows:
- Remember through Law of Gravitational energy, we studied how masses of the bodies determine the magnitude of force body A exerts on body B.
- Remember, the greater the distance between the two bodies, the lesser the gravitational pull is.
- Remember, the earth revolves around the Sun in 360 days while the moon revolves around the earth in 29/30 days.
- Remember, the earth and the moon collectively revolves around the sun through out the year.
Did you notice, the mass of earth, moon and sun are interdependent on the forces they exert on each other? Similarly, the force is dependent on the distance between these bodies, and the time in which they revolve around each other is dependent on the distance and the mass of these bodies. Subhan’Allah. Who maintained this cosmological balance?
Allah SWT states in the Quran at various places,
وَسَخَّرَ لَكُمُ اللَّيْلَ وَالنَّهَارَ وَالشَّمْسَ وَالْقَمَرَ ۖ وَالنُّجُومُ مُسَخَّرَاتٌ بِأَمْرِهِ ۗ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَآيَاتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَعْقِلُونَ
And He has subjected to you the night and the day, the sun and the moon; and the stars are subjected by His Command. Surely, in this are proofs for people who understand.
[Surah An-Nahl 16 : 12]
It is Allah who has maintained this cosmological balance in this Universe. But in this ayah Allah talks about the signs for the people of understanding, don’t He? What are these signs? One of them is what I was made to reflect upon last night. Allah says in the Quran,
هُوَ الَّذِي جَعَلَ الشَّمْسَ ضِيَاءً وَالْقَمَرَ نُورًا وَقَدَّرَهُ مَنَازِلَ لِتَعْلَمُوا عَدَدَ السِّنِينَ وَالْحِسَابَ
It is He Who made the sun a shining thing and the moon as a light and measured out its (their) stages, that you might know the number of years and the reckoning.
[Surah Yunus 10 : 5]
That you might know the number of years. This is the purpose of the Sun and the Moon apart from all the other purposes it serves. Can your mind relate the laws of physics to the phenomenon of time, how Allah SWT made them exactly at the right distance apart, with the exactly right mass to make them exactly 365 days for the sun and 29/30 days for the moon, for us to calculate days, months, years and centuries??? How He provided the most appropriate gravitational pull for them, not more to let them fall into each other and not less to let one lose the other? This cannot be the product of chance. Chance doesn’t have perfection.
O people of understanding, ponder over the signs of Allah. Fear Him much. Be dutyful to Him. He is above all that people associate with Him. Verily He is Subhana huwa taa’la a’ama yushrikoon.
إِنَّ فِي خَلْقِ السَّمَاوَاتِ وَالْأَرْضِ وَاخْتِلَافِ اللَّيْلِ وَالنَّهَارِ لَآيَاتٍ لِّأُولِي الْأَلْبَابِ
Verily! In the creation of the heavens and the earth, and in the alternation of night and day, there are indeed signs for men of understanding.
[Surah Ale-Imran 3 : 190]
